JUMU'AH MUBARAK
Friday, the best day of the week
In Islam Friday is not just a weekend, it is the day Allah set apart for us. Here is what the Qur'an and the Prophet ﷺ tell us about this day, laid out plainly with no assumptions.
What is Jumu'ah?
The word Jumu'ah comes from the Arabic root meaning gathering. On Fridays Muslims pause their day around noon, set work and trading aside, and come together at the mosque to pray Jumu'ah in congregation.
The Jumu'ah prayer replaces the noon (Zuhr) prayer for men who attend the mosque. It is only two rak'ahs, but those two rak'ahs are preceded by the khutbah, a sermon by the imam that brings the community back to what matters.
For women, Jumu'ah is not obligatory but is permitted and rewarded if they choose to attend. For anyone who cannot come (illness, travel, work that genuinely cannot be paused) the regular Zuhr prayer remains the duty.
The Qur'an on Jumu'ah
The entire 62nd surah is named Al-Jumu'ah. Verses 9–11 are its foundation.
“O you who believe, when the call to prayer is made on the day of Jumuʼah, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off business. That is better for you, if only you knew.”
Qurʼan 62:9
Listen to this ayah in the surah
“And when the prayer is completed, disperse through the land and seek the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often, so that you may succeed.”
Qurʼan 62:10
Listen to this ayah in the surahTwo short verses that hold the balance of Islam. Pause your work for Allah, return to life when the prayer is done. Friday is not an escape from the week, it is the remembrance the week is built around.

The first Jumu'ah in Islamic history was prayed in Madinah, soon after the Prophet's ﷺ Hijrah from Mecca. The narration locates it on the road between Quba and Madinah, in the valley of Banu Salim, at a place called Wadi Ranuna where the Prophet ﷺ led the first Jumu'ah congregation.
Before this revelation Friday was already a day Arab tribes gathered for other reasons. Islam took what was already there, the rhythm of coming together, and turned it toward Allah.
A hadith reports that the Prophet ﷺ said Friday is the best day the sun has risen upon, the day Adam (peace be upon him) was created, the day he was admitted to Paradise, and the day he was taken out of it. Friday is also the day on which the Last Hour will come.
Sahih Muslim 854
Why we gather together
Islam is not only a private faith, it has a communal side. The five daily prayers you can pray alone at home, but Jumu'ah asks for body next to body, shoulder to shoulder, with Muslims from your city you might otherwise never meet.
Once a week be reminded you are not alone. The doctor next to you, the taxi driver behind you, the student who just embraced Islam, the elderly man whose hearing is going, all of you are one row, one ummah, turned in one direction.
The Prophet ﷺ said the prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times more rewarded than the prayer prayed alone.
Sahih al-Bukhari 645, Sahih Muslim 650
The khutbah, and why it matters
The khutbah is a standing sermon the imam delivers before the Jumu'ah prayer. It has two parts separated by a brief sitting. The imam reminds the community of Allah, recites verses from the Qur'an, speaks to something the community needs to hear in that moment, and ends in supplication.
The khutbah is not an extra to Jumu'ah, the khutbah is the reason two rak'ahs replace the four of the noon prayer. Without the khutbah there is no Jumu'ah prayer, only an ordinary Zuhr.
This is why silence during the khutbah is required. If you tell someone next to you to be quiet during the khutbah, even that is considered too much speech. You are still, you listen, you take in the reminder.
Sahih al-Bukhari 934
The khutbah is also why Muslims in Bosnia, Malaysia, England, India, and Morocco actually know about each other. Imams hear about floods, about war, about new Muslims in the community, and they share it with rows of people who are listening. The khutbah is the living conversation a community holds with itself in the presence of Allah.
The Sunnah, what the Prophet ﷺ did on Fridays
All of this is recommended, none of it is obligatory. Take as much as you can.
- Ghusl (full wash) before going
The Prophet ﷺ said ghusl on Friday is a duty upon every adult Muslim attending Jumu'ah (most scholars read this as strongly recommended Sunnah rather than strictly obligatory).
Sahih al-Bukhari 858, Sahih Muslim 846
- Clean clothes, a good scent
Wear the best clothes you have, use a pleasant fragrance (women who attend public spaces are gently advised against strong perfume). Friday is a special day, and what you wear says so.
- Surah Al-Kahf
Reading the 18th surah (Al-Kahf, 'The Cave') during Friday (some narrations include from Maghrib on Thursday) brings light that stays with you until the next Friday.
al-Mustadrak 6169; classed hasan by many scholars
- Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ
Send abundant salawat (blessings) on the Prophet ﷺ on Fridays. 'The best of your days is Friday. Send salawat upon me on that day, for your salawat will be presented to me.'
Abu Dawud 1047, classed sahih
- The hour of duʿa
There is an hour on Friday in which no duʿa is refused. The most-followed narration places it in the last hour of the day, between Asr and Maghrib. Use that window, even if it is just ten quiet minutes.
Sahih al-Bukhari 935, Sahih Muslim 852, Abu Dawud 1048
- Arrive at the mosque early
The Prophet ﷺ described the rewards by hour of arrival, the earlier you come the greater the reward. The goal is not to collect points, the goal is to settle yourself before the khutbah begins.
Sahih al-Bukhari 881, Sahih Muslim 850
A simple Friday, start to finish
If this is the first time you are trying to follow the Sunnah of Friday, here is a route you can borrow.
- 1Thursday evening
Read Surah Al-Kahf (the 18th surah). A portion is fine, you do not need the whole thing at once.
- 2Friday morning
Make ghusl. Wear the best clothes you have. Use a good scent.
- 3Before noon
Set out early to the mosque. Pray two rak'ahs of greeting the mosque (Tahiyyat al-Masjid). Sit quietly, send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, or just be still.
- 4Khutbah and prayer
Sit and listen to the khutbah. Pray the two rak'ahs of Jumu'ah in congregation.
- 5After Jumu'ah
Pray the Sunnah rak'ahs after Jumu'ah (most pray either 2 or 4). Do not rush out the moment the imam finishes.
- 6Between Asr and Maghrib
This is the hour of duʿa. Give it ten quiet minutes. Ask for what is heavy, ask for others, send salawat.
- 7Throughout the day
Send salawat whenever you remember, while walking, waiting, before sleep.
